Third, there is no backfill. GA4 processes data forward only. Whatever setup you build starts counting from the day you turn it on and will not reconstruct the months of AI traffic you have already earned. That alone is a reason to stop reading and set this up today.

Step 1: Turn on GA4's native AI Assistant channel
As of May 2026, GA4 automatically classifies traffic from recognized AI assistants under a native channel called AI Assistant. Google has named ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude as recognized platforms. To see it, open Reports, then Acquisition, then Traffic acquisition, and set the primary dimension to Session default channel group. Treat this as the floor, not the finish line. The native channel has two gaps that matter. It does not capture Perplexity or Copilot, both of which stay buried in Referral. A custom channel group lets you define your own rules and, crucially, order them so they fire before GA4's generic Referral rule. If Referral fires first, your AI sessions stay misclassified. And keep the regex updated as new engines gain share, since the list above will not be the list a year from now.
