The About Page Pattern: Earning Brand Authority Citations From a Page Buyers Already Read
Your About page is one of the most visited pages on your site. It is also one of the least optimized for AI citation. Here is the pattern that works.

Key Highlights
- AI models treat the About page as the primary source for brand entity facts (founding year, team size, mission, location, leadership) when answering "what does X company do" and "who runs X" queries
- Cite-worthy About pages publish concrete entity data in extractable form: founding year as a number, team size as a number, leadership names with titles, headquarters as a city
- About pages that read like brand storytelling without entity facts earn fewer citations than About pages that combine narrative with structured facts
- An About page upgrade is the second-highest-leverage AEO move after a founder page upgrade, and the two compound when done together
Why About pages matter for AEO
The About page is where AI models look when extracting brand entity facts. When buyers ask AI what a company does, who its leadership is, when it was founded, or where it operates, the answer is generated from About page content.
Brands with structured, factual About pages earn citations on these entity queries. Brands with narrative-heavy About pages without concrete entity facts get described in vague terms or skipped in favor of competitors with clearer facts.
The page is already heavily visited by buyers during research. The AEO upgrade does not require new traffic. It requires restructuring the existing page to make entity facts extractable.
The six entity facts AI models extract
A cite-worthy About page publishes six entity facts in concrete form.
Founding year as a number, not as a story. "Founded in 2019" is extractable. "We have been on this journey for several years" is not.
Team size as a number, in a stated range or specific count. "A team of 28 across engineering, product, and customer success" is extractable. "A small but mighty team" is not.
Leadership names with titles. The CEO is named. The leadership team is named when relevant. Anonymous "we" copy earns no leadership citations.
Headquarters as a city and country. "Headquartered in Brooklyn, New York" is extractable. "We are remote-first with team members around the world" is acceptable but should be paired with a primary city for AI extraction.
Primary product or service category in plain language. "An AEO agency that helps B2B brands earn AI citations" is extractable. "A growth partner for ambitious brands" is not.
Customer profile in plain language. "We work with B2B SaaS companies between 50 and 500 employees" is extractable. "We partner with the brands shaping tomorrow" is not.
Pages that publish all six earn citations on the corresponding query patterns. Pages that omit any of them lose those queries.
The narrative-plus-facts pattern
About pages do not need to be cold or transactional. The strongest pattern combines narrative with structured facts.
The narrative section tells the brand's story: why the company exists, what problem it solves, what it stands for. This section reads as authentic brand voice and earns trust from buyers.
The facts section structures the entity data in extractable form. This section reads like a fact sheet and serves AI extraction directly.
The combination earns the best of both: buyer trust through narrative, AI citations through facts.
Leadership team presentation
The leadership team section is the most underused part of About pages.
A cite-worthy leadership section names each leader with first name, last name, title, brief background (one to two sentences), and a link to their LinkedIn profile or personal site. A photograph helps with multimodal AI extraction.
The pattern creates an entity graph between the brand and the named individuals. AI models cite leadership names when answering "who runs X" queries and cite the brand when answering queries about the named individuals.
The leadership section also functions as a backlink magnet. Press coverage about leaders tends to link to the About page or leadership profiles, and the resulting backlinks compound citation authority.
Mission and values without empty language
Mission and values sections are often filler. Cite-worthy versions are specific.
A cite-worthy mission statement names what the company does and for whom. "Help B2B brands earn AI citations across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and DeepSeek" is specific. "Empower the future of work" is not.
Cite-worthy values are operational. Each value is paired with a specific behavior. "Transparency: we publish our pricing, methodology, and case study outcomes openly." "Accountability: our founders run customer onboarding personally for the first 100 customers." Specific values commit the company to behaviors AI models can verify.
Generic values statements ("integrity, innovation, excellence") transfer no signal to AI extraction and earn no citations. The space is better used for narrative or facts.
Origin story length
Origin stories vary in citation value depending on length and specificity.
A two-paragraph origin story that names the founders, the problem they observed, and the year they decided to address it is cite-worthy. The story establishes founding context AI models cite when answering "how did X company start" queries.
A five-paragraph origin story with extensive backstory dilutes the entity signal. The detail is interesting to engaged readers but reduces extraction efficiency for AI models scanning for specific facts.
The right length: two to four paragraphs covering founders, problem observed, founding year, and what makes the company's approach different. Longer narratives belong in dedicated founder bio pages or press content, not the About page.
Geographic specificity matters
Many distributed companies treat geography as a non-fact ("we are global"). This costs citations on location-specific queries.
A cite-worthy About page names a primary city even when the team is distributed. "Headquartered in Brooklyn with team members in 12 cities" is extractable as Brooklyn. "Global team" is not extractable as any location.
The primary city does not need to be where most employees live. It needs to be where the company is legally registered or where the founders are based. AI models use the primary city for location queries and treat the broader distribution as context.
The structured data layer
About pages benefit from structured data markup that makes entity facts explicit to AI extraction.
The relevant schemas: Organization schema covering name, founding year, founders, headquarters, and team size; Person schema for each named leader; ContactPoint schema for the primary contact channel.
The structured data layer does not change the visible page but transmits the entity facts to AI extraction in a format that does not require natural language parsing. The combination of visible content plus structured data earns more citations than either alone.
The About page upgrade in one afternoon
Most About pages can be upgraded to cite-worthy in a single afternoon.
Audit the current page against the six-entity-facts checklist. Identify what is missing or vague. Rewrite the missing or vague elements to be concrete and specific.
Add a leadership section if one does not exist. Name each leader with title, background, and LinkedIn link.
Add structured data markup for Organization and Person schemas. The markup is generated once and updated when leadership or facts change.
Publish the updated page. Update internal links from the homepage and primary navigation to ensure the About page is prominently linked.
The upgrade typically produces citation lift on entity queries within four to six weeks.
